Brief Bio

Daniel H. Bowers, M.D. is a board-certified Family Physician and an HIV specialist certified by the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

Dr. Bowers got his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, and completed his residency in family medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.  He then joined a family practice group in St. Paul and taught family medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical.  It was there in 1981 that Dr. Bowers saw some of the first cases of gay men with swollen lymph nodes.  He built a collaboration of other physicians in the Twin Cities to share information about HIV and soon became a public speaker to medical groups, legal conferences and the news media.

In 1989 Dr. Bowers was recruited to join Pacific Oaks Medical Group in Los Angeles which had reported the first five cases of HIV in 1981 and had become the largest private practice in the country caring for HIV patients.  He became one of the senior partners and a nationally recognized thought-leader in HIV care as the group expanded to five locations with 17 providers.

In 2012 Dr. Bowers co-founded HIV Assisted Reproductive Technologies (HART) where as medical director he developed the protocol for medical review and clearance of HIV-positive men to donate sperm for embryo creation.  He was also responsible for reviewing this protocol with women contemplating becoming gestational surrogates for HIV-positive men.

Dr. Bowers continues to practice medicine and provide HIV care in New York.
